Types of language courses abroad

While selecting the type of language learning program abroad, make the right choice. We briefly describe the difference between language courses abroad.

  • General course: standard and intensive
    The most popular course that is present in the vast majority of schools. If you do not know which language program you need, then most likely we are talking about general course. Such programs include all components: speaking, writing, listening, reading. The number of lessons varies from 10 to 40 lessons per week, but as a rule, there is a standard course of 20 lessons or an intensive course - 30 lessons per week.
  • University preparation course - bachelor and master degree
    Such courses are called differently in the world. For example, in the UK it would be Foundation/Access Course for bachelor degree, and the Pre-Masters course for graduate programs. However, in English-speaking countries may have other names. Duration - from 1 semester to 1 year.
  • Language for specific purpose
    We are talking about courses related to a particular industry. If we take an example of English, then the courses may be the following: Aviation English, Medical English, Legal English, English for sales and marketing, English for oil and gas industry, English for tourism and so on. As you can see, we are talking about dozens of specializations.
  • Language course for Executives
    Typically we are talking about business language, for example, business English. Students are representatives of the top management of companies, such courses set a goal to achieve maximum results in a short time, which certainly affects the cost.
  • Vacation courses for adults
    A very broad category of language classes. Usually, this is a combination of a general course (see 1 about general course) with a program of extracurricular activities. For example, English and Golf, English and Diving. On the other hand, it may also mean the absence of children and teenagers in school. If you aren’t able to find such program, remember that the general course can be combined with self-selected activities in extracurricular time.
  • Summer schools for children and teenagers
    Age of participants vary - from 3-5 years old to 17 years. Classes take place mainly during the school holidays. Such courses are combined with extracurricular activities, for example, daily excursions, which makes the program rich and interesting. Sometimes can be combined with sport activities or be a part of program. For example, summer schools for football players (in the morning - English lessons, in the evening - football).
  • Foreign language Plus
    For people over a certain age. Usually for students over 50 years old.
  • Home tuition
    The student lives in the house of the teacher and having 1-on-1(individual lessons) per day. It’s one of the most expensive and most effective programs that provide maximum immersion in the language.
  • 1-on-1 or 2-on-1
    Individual classes with a teacher, or 2 students per teacher. However, in case of 2 students, both should be at the same level of knowledge of foreign language.
  • Teacher training
    Courses for teachers, who teach foreign language.
  • Internship
    Internship combined with language program. For example, firstly a student take 3 months language courses , then internship in the company. Or internship combined with courses. As a rule, regardless of language and country, a minimum level of proficiency is required.
  • Exam preparation courses
    There are dozens of international language exams in the world. Such programs differ in terms of format of training (group or individual lessons), and required level of language proficiency for admission to the course.
  • Language for academic purposes
    Depending on a language and a country, it could be a program of preparation for a university or a general academic language course, for example, for university professors.
  • Family or parent-child courses
    This is when a child and a parent attend the same school, of course, in different classes. We have to mention significant advantage - a synchronized schedule that will allow you to spend free time together with your child.
