    Spanish courses in Seville

Seville is the capital of Andalusia and the fourth-largest city in Spain (about 700,000 inhabitants). In terms of tourist numbers, Seville is surpassed only by Barcelona and Madrid, and 300 sunny days a year make the city especially attractive to students. Thanks to its rich history, impressive architecture and gastronomy, Seville has become one of the best places to learn “proper” Spanish in full immersion.

Advantages of Seville for learning Spanish

    • Strategic location: only 1.5 hours by train to Madrid. With a developed transport infrastructure, it is easy to reach cities such as Granada, Córdoba, Barcelona, Lisbon and even Morocco.
    • Total language environment: living and studying in a city where Spanish is the main language, students have a unique opportunity to improve skills in practice by communicating with locals every day.
    • Rich culture: Seville is famous for architectural masterpieces such as the Giralda, Seville Cathedral, the Royal Alcázar, Casa de Pilatos, the Santa Cruz quarter, Plaza de España and the Torre del Oro. Numerous flamenco, film and theatre festivals are held here, and Seville is renowned for both secular (the April Fair) and religious (Holy Week) celebrations.
    • International student community: foreign students from all over the world gather in the city, making Seville a meeting place for people of various cultures and nationalities.
    • Moderate expenses: housing, food and leisure are noticeably cheaper than in Barcelona or Madrid.

Disadvantages of Seville for learning Spanish

    • Summer heat: from June to August temperatures often exceed 40 °C.
    • Crowds of tourists during major holidays lead to higher prices and noise.

    Culture, attractions and nature

Seville astonishes with the harmony of Moorish and Christian architecture: the Royal Alcázar contrasts with the giant Gothic Cathedral and the elegant Giralda tower. The heart of the city is Plaza de España with its picturesque ceramic province benches and canals where people row boats. Across the Guadalquivir River lies the Triana quarter — the cradle of authentic flamenco, fairs and the best pottery workshops. In María Luisa Park you can relax among palm trees, peacocks and fountains, and in the evening attend a flamenco show in the former tobacco factory, now the university. The modern skyline is complemented by the wooden “mushroom” Metropol Parasol, offering a circular view of the old centre.

Nature lovers can easily reach the nearby Doñana biosphere reserve with dunes and flamingo colonies or the Sierra Norte mountains with hiking trails. Thus Seville offers a unique combination of historical monuments, green oases and a rich cultural life.

    Safety in Seville

According to the Numbeo index, the crime level in Seville is assessed as moderately low: the Crime Index is about 37 and the Safety Index roughly 63. Violent assaults and serious threats to residents’ lives are classified as “low”, whereas pickpocketing and minor theft are marked “moderate”. During the day 80 % of respondents feel safe on the streets, but after midnight this figure drops to 55 %. In the tourist zones of the centre the likelihood of theft increases, so visitors are advised to watch their belongings and avoid overfilled bags.

Vandalism, drug use and corruption are rated as “below average” issues and do not affect the everyday life of most citizens. About one-third of respondents believe that crime has slightly increased over the last five years, yet absolute figures remain lower than in Madrid or Barcelona. Overall Seville remains a safe destination for students and tourists if basic precautions are observed.

    Is it worth going?

Seville combines a warm climate, rich cultural events and high-quality language programmes. It is the perfect place to learn Spanish from scratch or improve your level while enjoying everything southern Spain has to offer.
